Blackened Seasoning is a homemade blend of the classic Cajun spice mix and tastes great on everything from chicken, steak, and fish to vegetables and dips.  This is the best low sodium blackened seasoning mix that can be blended in about 5 minutes and stored for over a year! You more than likely have all these spices in your spice rack right now. If not, they all are widely available in any grocery store.

I regularly make this homemade blended mix for my Blackened Chicken recipe. My regular favorite mix needed to be replaced because of the sky high sodium level. It’s simple to whip up your own seasoning mixes at home and store them for later use. I usually make a large batch to cover a few meals, since I use it so often.  For reference, the quantity in this recipe heavily covers three large butterflied chicken breasts, front and back.

Try Chicken breasts rubbed with Low Sodium Cajun Seasoning too!

What is Blackened Seasoning?

tonys creole seasoning nutrition

Blackened seasoning is a spice blend that is typically used in Cajun Cookin’ and runs a bit spicy.  It is very similar to either Cajun or Creole seasoning and it can be used in a variety of recipes.   Tony’s Creole Seasoning used to be one of my favorite main go-to spices.  But sadly that had to go, as it packs a whopping 350 mg of sodium per ¼ teaspoon. I had to look twice to make sure I was reading that right. Wow!

How to Make Homemade Blackened Seasoning

Blending this seasoning mix at home is quite simple and requires just a few readily available spices and herbs such as:

No sodium blackened spices
Spices for blackened seasoning displayed

Smoked Paprika ∞ Will enhance just about anything with a bold extra smokey kick!

Chipotle Pepper∞ Brings another subtle Mexican flavor without being ostentatious.

Garlic and Onion Powders∞ Both are absolutely necessary.  Be sure to use the powder version and not the salt infused.

Black pepper ∞ A coarse ground black pepper works best.

Dried herbs∞ Thyme and oregano are used in this recipe.

Cayenne pepper ∞ It is here that you would decrease or increase the spice heat level in this mix, adjust according to your taste preference.

Salt ∞ None. Yep this is sodium free and tastes just as awesome on anything.

Add all ingredients to a medium-size bowl and whisk to blend and knock down any clumps. Funnel blackened seasoning in a air-tight container and store in cool dry place for up to 1 or 2 years. Use it to season chicken, salmon, pork, steak, seafood, potatoes or any other recipe that needs a spicy Creole kick!

How to Store Homemade Seasoning Mixes & Spices

Like any spice, store homemade seasoning mixes in an airtight container and store in a cool, dry space.  I prefer to save and reuse the glass spice jars from used up spices.  The square jars with screw top lids are best.  You can also get ahead of the storage game with this nice set that comes with funnel and labels.

This blackened seasoning will last for up to 1-2 years at room temperature.  Spices will not go bad but will lose potency overtime. If this happens, you’re not using it enough!
