This Low Sodium Thousand Island Salad Dressing is tangy n’ sweet and nicely creamy. Plus it is so easy to make with simple basic pantry and fridge ingredients! It’s the perfect low sodium salad dressing sauce for all your favorite salads, sandwiches or veggies!
Blue cheese dressing is still my all-time favorite dressing. But, as a kid, I grew up with Thousand Island dressing as the main dressing in our family kitchen. So I still get quite a hankering for it especially since I can’t have my blue cheese that often anymore.
I savor it on salads, on a burger, in place of tartar sauce, dipping french fries and even my veggies!
In as few as 10 minutes, you can make a dressing that is better than any store-bought variety with no extra sugars and preservatives. Once I started making my own homemade low sodium dressings, I’ve never thought about buying another store dressing.

Sodium in Thousand Island dressing compared
Name brand store bought dressings range from 260-300mg of sodium per (2) two tablespoons. My Low Sodium Thousand Island Salad Dressing is only 29mg sodium per (2) two tablespoons! Plus, it is made with extra virgin olive or avocado oil and it has no added sugar.
Low Sodium Thousand Island dressing ingredients.
- My Low Sodium Mayonnaise – A big sodium saver, see ingredients below in recipe card.
- Heinz no salt added ketchup
- Heinz Sweet Relish squeezable bottle – 60mg/Tbsp, lowest sodium sweet relish I could find. The relish adds enough sweetness so I don’t think more sugar is required.
- Apple cider and white vinegar – split, or Red wine vinegar
- Onion – yellow or white, very finely minced
- Lea & Perrins Reduced Sodium Worcestershire Sauce
- Mrs. Dash Original Table Blend no salt to taste
Additional ingredient additions to tweak the flavor profile.
- Smoked paprika
- Lemon juice
- Reduced sodium black olives, finely chopped.
- For a little heat try my Low Sodium Pickled Peppers minced up.
- Garlic
- Minced prepared horseradish
- Add a splash of milk to thin out if needed.
How I made Homemade Thousand Island dressing.
I really think you need to use a mayonnaise base with this recipe for that creamy zing. Sour cream or yogurt just doesn’t cut it here for me. Just another few minutes and you can easily make your own Low Sodium Mayonnaise.
Don’t worry, I outline how to make it below in the recipe card or see my original recipe. Try making it with either extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil for your favorite taste.
Use Heinz squeezable sweet relish for this recipe, as only it has 60mg of sodium per tablespoon sodium. This salad dressing gets its sweetness and zest from the pickle relish. It had the lowest sodium level that I could find in the store at this time. Making your own relish would just take too much time for negligible lower sodium results.
Like the minced sweet relish, you want to mince your onion very finely. We are going for onion flavor, not onion crunch here. Large chunks of onion mean the onion flavor won’t spread evenly throughout.
It’s best to refrigerate for at least an hour or longer before serving. Allowing the flavors to co-mingle is very important. So, store your salad dressing in an air-tight container, or the easiest option in a mason jar, for at least one hour in the fridge or overnight.
Tips, storing, and Serving
I like being able to control the amount and type of fat and sugar with minimal chemical preservatives that I’m using on my salads and dips.
You can make it spicier if you want. Add a pinch or more of a hot spice as you prefer.
Homemade Low Sodium Thousand Island dressing will keep up to a week in a container with a tightly fitted lid or a jar. A wide-mouth mason jar is your best option to fill, serve from, and then easily clean.
Serve it over a tossed salad or a classic wedge salad. You can also serve it as a dip for French fries, appetizers, wraps or veggies.

Hi Bill!
My husband & I are still thoroughly enjoying this website for all the wonderful recipes!
Question: is it imperative to include the teas of ricotta cheese?
Thanks!
Lisa
Hi Lisa, Sorry about that, it appears I clicked the wrong ingredient on the drop down. It should be Reduced Sodium Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce not ricotta.
I will fix immediately. Thanks for the comment!
Bill
I absolutely love this and used it also on a Reuben casserole! Thanks
